Some good friends responded to the idea of looking at the endurance of significance with a story of their own. Carol was my equestrian trainer on Windmill Meadow Ranch. We watched their Devin and Dawn grow up and like us, they reveled in their grandchildren.
This story has two parts. You will want to take a couple minutes out for the remarkable video of Devin in his winning ride at a National Reining competition. Very classy, very inspirational. You will see success, and you will get the impact of how it is framed in significance by reading Carol’s description here. YOU’LL LOVE THEIR SHORT STORY AND THE YOU TUBE
“Gary, your blog posts on success and significance tie in with on-going discussions with Devin and Dawn over the years. We never pinned the word “significance” to it, but we really like that comparison. There are moments in parents’ lives when a warm glow moves through and you realize that maybe God is using your child for something significant, and it continues into their adult years. We invested well, and now we are seeing it in our grandchildren. You’re right, “legacy” is worth it all.
From the time Devin and Dawn were born, we have dedicated them to the Lord and prayed daily for their protection, provision, guidance, and contacts in life. We have asked God to provide just the right people, experiences, and spiritual truths to make them a beacon for Christ in their own way. Our hearts have been tugged, tears have flowed, and moments of unbelievable joy in praising God for the breakthroughs when we have specifically seen these prayers answered by our Heavenly Father.
We have tried not to miss opportunities to share God’s principles with them and to steer them to a daily, walking relationship with Christ that replaces our walk with them. Sure, there have been failures on our part, but we hold to the times when God takes them by His hand and walks them through another chapter of life for His glory.
Just to let you taste a little bit of our pleasure in Christ, we want to share with you an experience we had early this month at the National Western Stock Show Freestyle Reining. We knew that many factors would determine the winner. But as we always told the children when competing in various things over the years, winning is only a bonus. It’s all about what you learn as a person, what you give to others in the same situation, and how you honor the Lord.
The song that Devin used for this competition, “I Can Only Imagine” by Mercy Me, made a great statement about Devin, Jolene, their family and business. Now hold on to that moment and envision a rider, horse, and song challenging a large crowd to think about eternal life. Join with Devin as he shares in his own style himself and family, his riding skills, and most of all, an invitation to be gathered by God’s Holy Hosts. Success, yes. But even more so, significance.”
